Bessie McCoy Sweetenburg was born November 22, 1922 in Lee County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late John and Ella Wilson McCoy. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County. On October 14, 1949, she was married to the late Richard ?Pete? Sweetenburg and this union was blessed with ten loving children. One of her daughters, Cynthia Sweetenburg Addison predeceased her.
Mrs. Sweetenburg worked for many years as a farm laborer. She later worked for the Darlington County School District and retired with nearly 20 years of service. She was a lifelong member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served for many years on the Usher Board, the Missionary Society and on the Senior Choir.
Bessie McCoy Sweetenburg leaves to cherish her loving memory five daughters, Bessie Mae Abraham, Patricia Addison, Thelma Brewer and Tencie Simon all of Hartsville, SC and Teresa (Marion) Edwards of Lithonia, GA; four sons, Robert L. (Gwendolyn) McCoy, Richard (April) Sweetenburg, Jr., Ricky (Pattie) Sweetenburg all of Hartsville, SC and Leonard (Gloria) Sweetenburg of Fairfax, SC; one brother, Bishop James (Christine) McCoy of Hartsville, SC; one sister, Mary McCoy of Hartsville, SC; 35 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and very dear friends.
